Chlorofluorocarbons were invented in 1928 to be used as an effective refrigerant and coolant for air conditioners and refrigerators. It took until 1974 for scientists to notice a hole forming in the ozone, although they hadn’t directly attributed it to chlorofluorocarbons yet. In 1987 the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was put into place after scientists had discovered what CFCs were doing to the ozone.
The Montreal Protocol has phased out ozone-destroying substances over time, replacing them with other chemical classes.
Fun Fact!
CFCs have been virtually phased out since 2009 thanks to this protocol.
